Modifications can range from the addition of a fluorescent dye to the alteration of the sugar phosphate backbone. Modifiers can be coupled at the 5’, internal or 3’ position depending on the modification and application. Modifications render unique properties to the oligos such as increased resistance to nucleases, enhanced binding properties or improved oligo delivery to cells. In addition to other applications, fluorescent dye labelled oligos enable quantitative gene copy number estimations, an application that is widely used in research and clinical diagnostics.
